Songs have messages of good and not-so-good built in. Songs are like little plays; the songwriter is the playwright, the singer is the actor, the words are the script. When songs are about powerful topics like love and death, when they contain emotional messages, this gives the singer something to work with; similar to the reason that actors like to play vivid characters.
